About Armand Bayou Nature Center

Armand Bayou Nature Center is a 2,500-acre protected coastal wetland preserve located in Pasadena and Houston, Texas. The preserve encompasses marshes, prairies, forested wetlands, and riparian zones offering rich habitats for a broad variety of native flora and fauna. The bayou, one of the last remaining natural bayous in the Houston metropolitan area, supports a diverse collection of plants and wildlife including several endangered species. Historically, the area was home to Native American tribes and later protected as open space to conserve its natural integrity amid rapid urbanization. Today, the center is operated by the Armand Bayou Nature Center organization, providing public education, research opportunities, and recreational activities such as hiking and birdwatching. The preserve features over 7 miles of well-maintained trails through pine flatwoods and wetlands, along with an observation tower offering panoramic views of the bayou and surrounding habitats. Visitors can explore various ecosystems, spot species like alligators, great blue herons, and bald eagles, and learn about coastal Texas ecology. The nature center also hosts guided tours, school field trips, and volunteer programs. Its proximity to the Houston metropolitan area makes it a valuable natural getaway for residents and tourists interested in outdoor experiences and wildlife observation within a suburban setting.
