About Vratsa Balkan Nature Park
Vratsa Balkan Nature Park, established in 1990, is nestled in the northern part of the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina) in Vratsa Province, Bulgaria. Covering over 27,000 acres, the park embodies one of the most striking natural regions of the country, featuring jagged limestone cliffs, karst caves, pristine alpine meadows, and dense beech and fir forests. It acts as a vital habitat for a wide range of species including brown bears, wolves, chamois, and over 130 bird species such as the Eurasian eagle-owl and griffon vultures. The park is historically significant for its archaeological sites, traditional rural villages, and evidence of early human settlement. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to its extensive trail network with options ranging from gentle walks to challenging climbs, particularly in the Vratsa Rocks area, renowned for some of Bulgaria’s best rock climbing routes. The park’s emblematic features include the majestic Ledenika Cave, famous for its spectacular ice formations in winter, and the breathtaking panoramic views from the peaks along the central Balkan ridge.
