About Reserva Natural das Berlengas

Reserva Natural das Berlengas

The Reserva Natural das Berlengas is a small archipelago located about 10 to 15 kilometers west of the Portuguese mainland near the town of Peniche. It consists primarily of the Berlenga Grande island alongside several smaller islets and rocks. The reserve covers both terrestrial and marine ecosystems, providing important habitat for seabirds, endemic plants, and marine wildlife. The rugged cliffs, caves, and crystal-clear waters make it a key site for ecological research, birdwatching, scuba diving, and kayaking. Berlenga Grande, the largest island, features historical landmarks such as the 17th-century Fort of São João Baptista, strategically built to protect the coast from pirates. Visitors can hike trails that showcase dramatic ocean views while spotting rare seabirds like the European storm petrel and the yellow-legged gull. The reserve is a critical nesting area for many avian species and supports a diverse underwater environment with rich marine biodiversity, making it popular for snorkeling and diving. Access is limited to daily boat trips from Peniche, helping preserve its fragile ecosystem. With its unique combination of natural beauty, wildlife significance, and cultural heritage, Reserva Natural das Berlengas offers an exceptional outdoor experience focused on nature appreciation and low-impact recreation.
