About Red Clay Creek Preserve

Red Clay Creek Preserve is a multi-use natural preserve located in northern Delaware near the Pennsylvania border, encompassing approximately 1,200 acres of forested uplands, wetlands, and riparian areas along Red Clay Creek. Owned and managed by the Delaware Nature Society, the preserve protects one of the largest undisturbed creek valleys in the state. The terrain includes mature hardwood forests dominated by oak, hickory, and tulip poplar, along with a rich understory that supports diverse wildlife including numerous bird species, amphibians, and small mammals. The preserve’s streams and wetlands play a critical role in protecting water quality within the Brandywine Creek watershed. Historically, the area was used for milling and farming, and some remnants of old stone foundations remain along trails. Outdoor enthusiasts can find extensive hiking opportunities on well-maintained trails that range from easy to moderate difficulty, with footbridges crossing the creek and streamside boardwalks enhancing access. The preserve also offers opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and environmental education programs offered by the Delaware Nature Society. Its proximity to Wilmington and small towns like Greenville make it a popular destination for locals seeking a nature escape without traveling far. Visitors appreciate the peaceful forest setting, abundant wildlife, and the chance to explore one of Delaware’s largest protected natural areas. Educational signage along trails promotes understanding of local ecology and conservation efforts. Red Clay Creek Preserve plays a vital role in regional habitat connectivity and watershed protection.
