About Peñalara Natural Park

Peñalara Natural Park is situated in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range, north of Madrid, Spain. Established to protect the rich natural and geological heritage of the area, it encompasses the Peñalara Massif, which features the highest peak of the range, Peñalara Peak, at 2,428 meters (7,969 feet). The landscape is dominated by dramatic granite formations sculpted by glacial activity, which has created a series of glacial cirques, moraines, and lagoons including the famous Laguna Grande de Peñalara. The park’s ecosystems range from dense Scots pine forests and mountain heathlands at lower elevations to alpine meadows and rocky outcrops near the summit. This protected area hosts a diverse variety of flora including rare endemic plants and abundant wildlife such as ibex, roe deer, mouflon, and several bird species like the golden eagle and peregrine falcon. The park’s network of trails is highly popular with hikers, climbers, and wildlife enthusiasts. Key recreational activities include alpine hiking to the summit peaks, birdwatching, educational nature walks, and ice climbing in winter. Peñalara Natural Park holds cultural significance as well, with evidence of traditional grazing and mountain use that shaped the landscape. It appeals strongly to visitors seeking a blend of rugged mountain adventure and tranquil natural beauty easily accessible from Madrid.
