About Navarre Pyrenees Natural Park

Navarre Pyrenees Natural Park

Navarre Pyrenees Natural Park is situated in the northeastern corner of Navarre, Spain, bordering France within the western Pyrenees mountain chain. The park covers high mountain terrain with rugged peaks, deep glacial valleys, and karst landscapes. Elevations range from approximately 600 meters in valleys to over 2,400 meters at summits such as the iconic Pic d'Orhy, the highest peak in Navarre. The park's diverse ecosystems include dense beech and fir forests, alpine meadows, and rocky outcrops, supporting a rich variety of flora such as Pyrenean orchids and fauna including brown bears, Pyrenean chamois, and golden eagles. The park has historical significance with ancient Roman roads and several traditional Basque and Navarrese villages like Ochagavía and Uztárroz, where visitors can experience local culture and cuisine. Recreation opportunities abound, with hundreds of miles of trails suitable for hiking and mountain biking, excellent rock climbing sites, and trout fishing in mountain streams. Winter brings snow sports including snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Notable landmarks include the Irabia reservoir, the Irati Forest (one of Western Europe's largest beech-fir forests), and the unique karst caves like Zugarramurdi. The park attracts outdoor enthusiasts as well as those interested in rural heritage and sustainable tourism. Facilities include visitor centers with guided tours and educational programs aimed at preserving the park’s natural and cultural values.
