About West Sister Island National Wildlife Refuge

West Sister Island National Wildlife Refuge

West Sister Island National Wildlife Refuge is located 8 miles off the coast of Ohio in Lake Erie and is one of the most important bird nesting areas in the Great Lakes region. Established in 1937 as the first national wildlife refuge in this region, it is part of the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The island spans 82 acres and is home to one of the largest colonial bird nesting areas of great blue herons, great egrets, and black-crowned night-herons in the U.S. This area is inaccessible to the public to protect its sensitive habitat, making it a sanctuary for over 300 species of birds throughout the year. The refuge is vital for conservation efforts, providing key breeding grounds and an essential rest stop for migratory birds. Historical remnants of World War II operations as a defense site can be found here, adding an intriguing layer to its background.
