Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in east-central Mississippi, the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge spans over 48,000 acres and features a variety of habitats including forests, wetlands, and open water. Established in 1940, the refuge was initially set up as a migratory bird sanctuary and remains an important stopover point for numerous bird species. The refuge is home to an impressive array of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, alligators, and over 250 bird species. The Bald Eagle and the endangered Red-Cockaded Woodpecker are among the notable residents of this refuge.
