Located in the Puntarenas province of Costa Rica, the refuge stands out with its pristine tropical rainforests and numerous streams. The region is known for its high biodiversity, housing numerous species of plants and animals including scarlet macaws, toucans, and howler monkeys. Established in 1984 to protect these natural habitats, the refuge plays a critical role in conservation efforts within the Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve. Visitors can explore a variety of ecosystems ranging from lush lowland rainforests to coastal mangroves. Recreational activities include hiking and wildlife watching, with trails that lead adventurers through deep forests brimming with exotic fauna and flora. Due to its unique location near the coast, the refuge provides opportunities to enjoy both terrestrial and marine environments, making it a popular destination for ecotourism.
