Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Established in 1964, Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge spans nearly 11,000 acres along the southeastern shores of Walter F. George Lake, also known as Lake Eufaula, straddling the border of Alabama and Georgia. The refuge contains a mosaic of hardwood swamps, bottomland forests, and open water habitats that support diverse flora and fauna. It is a critical wintering ground for waterfowl and provides essential habitat for various migratory birds, deer, turkey, and other wildlife. The refuge is particularly renowned for its populations of wood ducks, mallards, and other waterbirds.
