Established in 1943, the refuge features fresh, salt, and brackish water ecosystems alongside hardwood swamps, salt marshes, and pine flatwoods. The refuge offers a unique outdoor experience with its network of waterways and trails, making it an ideal location for kayaking, canoeing, and observing wildlife, especially the numerous bird species that inhabit the area.
