About Sabine National Wildlife Refuge

Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1937, is located in southwestern Louisiana along the Sabine Lake and Gulf of Mexico. Covering over 124,000 acres, the refuge features an expansive combination of marshes, swamps, open water, and barrier islands. This diverse coastal habitat supports abundant wildlife including migratory waterfowl, wading birds, alligators, and various fish species. As part of the Gulf Coast migratory bird flyway, it serves as a critical wintering ground for ducks, geese, and other water birds. The refuge comprises several diverse environments such as fresh and saltwater marshes, bayous, and barrier islands, which helps maintain a biologically productive estuary. Recreational opportunities include birdwatching—particularly during fall and winter waterfowl migrations—fishing for species like red drum and speckled trout, hunting, and boating on Sabine Lake and adjacent channels. Notable sites include the Peveto Woods Bird Sanctuary, famous for neo-tropical migrant bird species in spring and fall. The refuge’s extensive marshlands also allow for photography and nature study. Visitor appeal is enhanced by accessible boat launches and observation platforms that provide close wildlife encounters while promoting conservation. Management focuses on preserving coastal wetlands amidst challenges from hurricanes, oil spills, and habitat fragmentation. As a refuge, Sabine balances wildlife conservation with public enjoyment and education about fragile coastal ecosystems unique to the Louisiana Gulf Coast.
