About Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary

Located in the eastern part of Missouri near the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary protects approximately 2,000 acres of wetlands, bottomland forests, and grasslands, providing critical stopover habitat for thousands of migratory birds. Established in 1953 as part of efforts to preserve migratory bird habitat along the Mississippi Flyway, the sanctuary serves as a refuge for waterfowl, shorebirds, songbirds, and raptors. The sanctuary's riverine wetlands are shaped by periodic flooding, creating dynamic habitats favored by many species including ducks, herons, and bald eagles. Visitors can explore over six miles of paved and natural surface trails that traverse wetlands, forests, and observation decks offering excellent wildlife viewing. The sanctuary features interpretive signage, a visitor contact station, and observation platforms designed for birdwatching and photography. Seasonal highlights include spring and fall migrations when large flocks of geese, ducks, and other birds can be observed along with occasional sightings of endangered species such as the interior least tern. Recreational opportunities include hiking, wildlife photography, and environmental education programs. The sanctuary's proximity to the city of St. Louis makes it accessible for day visits and nature study. Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary is also part of the larger complex of refuges along the Mississippi River, emphasizing habitat connectivity and conservation. Visitors benefit from well-maintained trails, quiet observation points, and the chance to experience the river floodplain ecosystem in multiple seasons.
