About Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge

Located in central Iowa near the town of Prairie City, Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge covers more than 8,600 acres of restored prairie, wetlands, and oak savanna habitats. Established in 1990, this refuge represents one of the largest efforts to restore the original tallgrass prairie ecosystem that once covered much of the Midwest. The geography consists mainly of rolling hills and prairies with carefully reintroduced native grasses and wildflowers, along with hardwood tree savanna areas. Visitors can encounter a variety of wildlife including bison, elk, prairie chickens, and migratory birds, making it an outstanding destination for wildlife watchers and photographers. The refuge is a key site in the effort to preserve biodiversity and maintain the historic prairie environment. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore over 22 miles of hiking trails, including accessible boardwalks through wetland areas. Interpretative exhibits at the visitor center provide insights into prairie restoration techniques and the natural history of the region. Seasonal programs and guided tours are offered to engage visitors with the refuge’s ecosystem and conservation mission. Apart from hiking, the refuge facilitates bird watching, photography, and educational outings. With limited public camping and no hunting permitted, the refuge focuses on habitat protection while promoting low-impact recreation. The combination of prairie landscapes, restored fauna, and educational resources make Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge a valuable natural area for both casual visitors and nature enthusiasts seeking to experience one of Iowa’s few remaining native prairie environments.
