About Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge

Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge spans over 11,000 acres along the Snake River near Hagerman, Idaho. Established in 1940, the refuge was primarily created to provide wintering habitat for the greater sandhill crane and other migratory birds. Its landscape is characterized by islands, bottomland hardwoods, wetlands, marshes, and river channels that support a wide variety of birds, mammals, fish, and plants. The refuge lies within a semi-arid region but the presence of the Snake River and associated wetlands creates a rich ecological zone attracting numerous species, including bald eagles, waterfowl, river otters, and several species of trout. Visitors can explore the refuge via driving routes and several hiking trails that offer scenic views of the river and bird colonies. Fishing is popular in the Snake River and surrounding waterways, where anglers seek species such as rainbow trout and bass. The refuge’s wetlands are crucial stopover points for migratory birds on the Pacific Flyway. Educational programs and interpretive signage help visitors understand the area's ecological importance. The refuge is also significant for conservation efforts, working to protect riparian habitat and maintain healthy waterfowl populations. Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge attracts photographers, birders, and outdoor enthusiasts interested in wildlife habitat unique to the Idaho High Desert river corridor.
