About North Umpqua River Scenic Area

The North Umpqua River Scenic Area in Oregon offers outstanding natural beauty highlighted by pristine waterways, dense old-growth forests, and excellent opportunities for fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The North Umpqua River Scenic Area is located in the southern Cascade Mountains of Oregon and is managed by the Umpqua National Forest. Designated in 1988, the scenic area protects over 57 miles of the North Umpqua River corridor, renowned for its clear, cold waters, surrounded by dense forests of Douglas fir, western hemlock, and cedar. The geography includes rugged canyon walls carved by the river with several stunning waterfalls such as Toketee Falls and Watson Falls, adding to the area's visual appeal. The region supports diverse wildlife including black bears, Roosevelt elk, bald eagles, and abundant trout populations that make it a prime location for fly fishing. Visitors can explore numerous trails that range from short interpretive walks to longer backcountry routes, offering views of river rapids, waterfalls, and old-growth forest ecosystems. Historically, the area has been home to Native American tribes and later was developed for logging before gaining protection due to its ecological and recreational value. Popular activities include camping, hiking, fishing, mountain biking, and scenic drives along Highway 138 which follows much of the river's length. The North Umpqua is also a Wild and Scenic River, preserving its free-flowing condition and unique natural character. Its blend of accessible recreation, pristine nature, and vibrant river environment makes the North Umpqua River Scenic Area a favored destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking river adventures and forest exploration in southwestern Oregon.
