About Long Island Pine Barrens

The Long Island Pine Barrens National Reserve spans over 100,000 acres across central Suffolk County, New York, protecting one of the largest remaining undeveloped areas on Long Island. The reserve primarily consists of pitch pine and scrub oak forest, interspersed with wetlands, grasslands, and rare dwarf pine plains. Created in 1993, the reserve conserves a globally rare ecosystem vital for groundwater recharge, supporting rare plant species and diverse wildlife including the eastern fence lizard, pine barrens moonseed, and various migratory birds. With a flat to gently rolling topography shaped by glacial outwash, the area's sandy soils sustain fire-adapted vegetation communities. Recreation opportunities include over 100 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, as well as bird watching and educational programs. Notable landmarks include the Berkley White Pines area, one of the largest stands of mature pitch pines, and the historic Cat Hollow Interpretive Trails. The region's protection has been critical in maintaining clean aquifers that serve much of Long Island's drinking water. Visitors find the Pine Barrens an accessible wilderness escape close to suburban areas, offering solitude, wildlife viewing, and seasonal natural beauty. Many trails connect to local parks and smaller natural preserves that emphasize the ecological and cultural importance of this unique landscape. The reserve is managed through a collaboration between state, local, and federal agencies to balance conservation with public access.
