About Youghiogheny River Lake

Youghiogheny River Lake, formed by the Youghiogheny Dam operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, lies primarily in southwestern Pennsylvania with portions extending into Maryland. The lake covers approximately 2,800 surface acres and stretches roughly 14 miles along the Youghiogheny River valley, set within a rugged Appalachian terrain marked by steep hillsides, mixed hardwood forests, and rich biodiversity. Established in the 1940s primarily for flood control and water management, the area has since evolved into a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The lake supports boating, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing, with species including smallmouth bass, walleye, and muskellunge drawing anglers year-round. Surrounding forests provide habitat for white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and diverse bird species, attracting wildlife viewers and photographers. Several developed and primitive campgrounds and picnic areas encompass the shoreline, offering visitors options for overnight stays and day use. Hiking trails offer access to scenic overlooks, wooded ridges, and streams feeding into the lake, allowing exploration of the Appalachian foothills. Notable nearby points of interest include the community of Confluence, Pennsylvania, located near where the Youghiogheny River meets the Casselman and Laurel Hill Creek, and the intricate network of connected state parks and forests nearby. The lake's combination of water activities, land-based recreation, and serene natural beauty appeals to families, anglers, paddlers, and hikers alike, especially in spring through fall when conditions are optimal.
