About Mississinewa Lake Recreation Area

Mississinewa Lake Recreation Area is located in northeastern Indiana, primarily within Miami and Wabash counties. Created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers following the construction of Mississinewa Dam on the Mississinewa River, the area encompasses a 5,200-acre reservoir surrounded by roughly 7,700 acres of forest and wildlife habitat. The lake and park provide flood control, water supply, and recreational opportunities. The terrain consists of gently rolling hills, mixed hardwood forests, open meadows, and riparian zones along the lake's shoreline. Native wildlife includes white-tailed deer, wild turkey, black bear, and various migratory bird species, making it attractive for wildlife viewing and hunting in season. The recreation area features multiple campgrounds, picnic areas, boat ramps, fishing piers, and several miles of hiking trails suitable for casual walks and mountain biking. Fishing is a popular sport, targeting species such as largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bluegill. The park also hosts seasonal events like fishing tournaments and interpretive programs. Mississinewa Lake Recreation Area is valued by families and outdoor enthusiasts seeking accessible water-based recreation close to urban centers like Marion and Wabash, Indiana. The combination of reservoir water activities, wooded trails, and well-maintained facilities contribute to its broad visitor appeal. The site reflects mid-20th-century federal efforts for flood control and conservation, balanced with providing public recreational resources.
