About Fort Peck Lake Recreation Area

Fort Peck Lake Recreation Area, located in northeast Montana, centers around Fort Peck Lake, a vast reservoir created by the Fort Peck Dam on the Missouri River. Covering approximately 245,000 acres of water, it stands as one of the largest artificial lakes in the country. The reservoir and surrounding landscape feature dramatic badlands, rolling prairie, and cottonwood forests that support a diverse array of wildlife, including deer, elk, bald eagles, and migratory waterfowl. The lake was formed following the construction of the Fort Peck Dam in the 1930s as part of the New Deal’s Public Works Administration. It serves not only as a hydroelectric power source but also as a crucial water recreation area attracting anglers, boaters, and campers. Anglers prize the lake for species such as walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and sauger. Boating is among the most popular activities with numerous boat ramps and marinas spread throughout the shorelines. The area offers numerous developed campgrounds and primitive sites for visitors who want to enjoy the remote and scenic surroundings. Birdwatchers also find excellent opportunities with seasonal migrations and resident raptor populations. The recreation area’s landscape includes steep coulees and bluffs that provide scenic overlooks and hiking opportunities, though many visitors focus on water-based activities. Fort Peck Lake Recreation Area appeals to those seeking expansive outdoor experiences in a less crowded setting, with a genuine feel of Montana’s vast open spaces and water resources.
