Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Zorkul Nature Reserve, located in the remote Gorno-Badakhshan region of Tajikistan, spans a wild and spectacular portion of the Pamir Mountains. This reserve is surrounding the Zorkul Lake, which sits at 4,130 meters above sea level and serves as the heart of the reserve's ecological system. Historically, the reserve was established to protect the breeding grounds of the bar-headed goose and other nesting bird species frequenting the region. Visitors to the reserve can enjoy scenes of snow-capped peaks and expansive valleys, supporting a range of activities from birdwatching to high-altitude trekking. The reserve is a crucial habitat for several rare species, including the Marco Polo sheep and the snow leopard. Due to its rugged terrain and remote location, Zorkul Nature Reserve offers a rare glimpse into an unspoiled natural world.
