Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the northeastern corner of Hungary within the Northern Hungary region, the Zemplén Protected Landscape Area encompasses an extensive volcanic mountain range renowned for its rich geological formations and rolling, forested hills. The area stretches over approximately 2,000 square kilometers and features unique basalt and andesite rock formations from ancient volcanic activity. Ecologically, the landscape is characterized by mixed deciduous and coniferous forests, supporting a wide variety of flora and fauna, including protected species such as the European lynx, black stork, and numerous rare orchids. The region's biodiversity benefit from the area's mosaic of habitats, including riparian zones, wetlands, and grasslands alongside the hills. Historically, the Zemplén area is dotted with medieval castles and ruins, such as the iconic Boldogkő Castle and Füzér Castle, which add cultural depth and scenic viewpoints for visitors. Outdoor recreation is abundant, with well-marked hiking trails traversing steep ridges and serene valleys, mountain biking routes, and opportunities for wildlife watching. The Bodrog River, running near the region, complements the landscape with fishing and paddle sports.
