About Yukon Wildlife Preserve

The Yukon Wildlife Preserve offers an exceptional opportunity to observe native northern wildlife in spacious, naturalistic enclosures, showcasing species unique to the Yukon and subarctic regions.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Yukon Wildlife Preserve is located just northeast of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada. Spanning over 700 acres, it is dedicated to the conservation and public education of northern wildlife species representative of the Yukon and surrounding subarctic ecosystems. The preserve’s landscape consists of boreal forests, wetlands, and open tundra-like areas, creating diverse habitats suitable for species adaptation and survival. Established in 1992, it features more than 11 kilometers of walking trails that allow visitors to explore the varied terrain and view animals in large natural enclosures. Among the key residents are wood bison, muskoxen, caribou, Dall sheep, moose, mountain goats, and a variety of birds such as ravens and ptarmigans. Visitors can learn about northern wildlife through interpretive signage and guided tours, which offer insight into animal behavior, habitat challenges, and ongoing conservation efforts. The preserve is a popular destination for families, wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and researchers aiming to observe species rarely accessible elsewhere in such close proximity. The Yukon Wildlife Preserve also takes part in breeding and preservation programs aimed at maintaining genetic diversity for some vulnerable species. In addition to wildlife viewing, the trails wind through visually striking landscapes, especially during autumn when the golden hues of the boreal forest contrast with the white snow of early winter. The combination of accessible wildlife encounters and educational programming makes the Yukon Wildlife Preserve a distinctive and valuable protected area in the north.
