About Wümme Valley Nature Park

Wümme Valley Nature Park is a serene protected area in northern Germany featuring expansive wetlands, lowland forests, and meandering rivers that offer excellent opportunities for hiking, wildlife observation, and river-based recreation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located between the cities of Bremen and Hamburg, Wümme Valley Nature Park protects one of the largest near-natural wetland landscapes in northern Germany. The park spans the gently rolling landscapes along the Wümme River and its tributaries, characterized by moorlands, floodplain forests, heathlands, and meadows. This mosaic of habitats supports a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including rare bird species such as the black stork and the white-tailed eagle. Historically, the area has been shaped by centuries of traditional farming and peatland use, although today conservation efforts focus on restoring natural flood regimes and protecting native species. Visitors can explore more than 150 kilometers of well-marked trails across a network of footpaths, cycling routes, and waterway corridors—all set within a peaceful rural countryside. Seasonal birdwatching and canoe tours along the Wümme River are especially popular. The park is also noted for cultural landmarks including charming traditional villages, old mills, and historic manor houses tucked within the landscape. Affordable accommodations and guided nature programs make it appealing for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and naturalists seeking tranquility close to urban centers. Thanks to its combination of ecologically valuable wetlands and recreational opportunities, the Wümme Valley Nature Park presents an accessible, off-the-beaten-path destination showcasing northern Germany's unique river valley ecosystem.
