Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Vam Ho Bird Sanctuary, located in Kien Giang Province in southern Vietnam, is an ecologically important wetland area that serves as a crucial refuge for numerous bird species, including many endangered and migratory waterfowl. The sanctuary consists predominantly of mangrove forests, freshwater marshes, and riverine habitats that support a diverse range of wildlife. It is situated near the Gulf of Thailand, benefiting from a tropical monsoon climate that influences its seasonal water levels and habitat conditions. Beyond birds, the area supports various fish, amphibians, reptiles, and other wetland-dependent species. Historically, Vam Ho was established to protect vital breeding and feeding grounds threatened by human activity and habitat loss. Visitors to Vam Ho can experience exceptional birdwatching opportunities, especially during migratory seasons when populations swell with species from as far as Siberia and northern Asia. The sanctuary is also a living laboratory for ecological studies and environmental education in Vietnam. While primarily a conservation zone, limited ecotourism activities such as guided boat tours and nature walks are available, allowing for wildlife observation without disturbing sensitive areas. Its remote location offers a tranquil setting for outdoor enthusiasts interested in bird photography and nature appreciation. Conservation efforts continue to address challenges such as habitat degradation, pollution, and the impacts of climate change on wetland ecosystems. Vam Ho Bird Sanctuary remains one of the region’s most significant protected areas for wetland biodiversity and plays a key role in regional and global efforts to conserve migratory waterbirds.
