About Tommy Thompson Park

Tommy Thompson Park is a unique urban wilderness park located on a man-made peninsula in Toronto, Ontario, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching, hiking, and exploring Lake Ontario’s waterfront habitats.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Tommy Thompson Park, also known locally as the Leslie Street Spit, is a distinctive 331-hectare (approximately 818 acres) man-made peninsula extending into Lake Ontario from the eastern edge of downtown Toronto. Originally constructed with fill from construction projects starting in the 1950s, the park has since evolved into a thriving natural habitat and recreational area. It is managed as an urban wildlife refuge, providing sanctuary to a wide variety of native and migratory bird species, including several rare and endangered birds, making it one of the best birdwatching sites in the region. The park’s diverse habitats include marshes, wetlands, grasslands, and woodlands that support rich biodiversity.

Visitors enjoy over 8 kilometers (approximately 5 miles) of flat, well-maintained trails ideal for walking, cycling, and running. Fishing and photography are popular along the waterfront, where visitors can observe the dynamic interactions between urban infrastructure and natural ecosystems. The park also attracts outdoor enthusiasts seeking open spaces with scenic lake views away from the city bustle. While camping is not permitted, the park’s accessibility and unique location on the shores of Lake Ontario make it a favored spot for day use.

Key landmarks within Tommy Thompson Park include the Leslie Street Docks, several bird blinds for unobtrusive wildlife viewing, and distinctive lagoons created by the breakwaters. The park has also become an important educational site for conservation efforts, especially in urban habitat restoration. Visitors to Tommy Thompson Park experience a blend of industrial heritage and revived nature, making it an exceptional example of urban ecological restoration and outdoor recreation.
