About Taebaek Mountains

The Taebaek Mountains are a prominent and scenic mountain range stretching along the eastern Korean Peninsula, offering rugged terrain, ancient forests, and cultural landmarks to outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Taebaek Mountains form the major mountain spine along the eastern side of the Korean Peninsula, extending approximately 500 kilometers from the southern province of Gyeongsangbuk-do northward through Gangwon-do and into the central region of Chungcheongbuk-do. This range is notable for its steep ridges, deep valleys, and high elevations, with peaks such as Taebaeksan reaching over 1,500 meters. The mountains serve as a critical watershed boundary and house diverse temperate forests, including mixed coniferous and deciduous trees, supporting rich biodiversity including Korean fir, pine species, and rare fauna like the Asiatic black bear and musk deer. Historically, the Taebaek Mountains have been integral to Korean culture and spirituality, featuring ancient Buddhist temples, including the well-known Manggyeongsa Temple located on Taebaeksan, as well as sacred sites connected to shamanistic traditions. Outdoor recreation in the Taebaek Mountains spans hiking, mountain biking, winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding, and seasonal sightseeing with spectacular autumn foliage and spring azaleas. Popular hiking routes traverse ridgelines with panoramic vistas of the East Sea and scenic waterfalls, while multiple protected areas and national parks preserve the natural and cultural heritage of the range. Visitors appreciate the blend of rugged wilderness, invigorating mountain climates, and rich traditional heritage, making the Taebaek Mountains a favored destination for active travel and eco-tourism within South Korea.
