About Susquehanna River Greenway

The Susquehanna River Greenway is a multi-state scenic and recreational corridor preserving the natural, cultural, and recreational values along the Susquehanna River. It offers hiking, paddling, fishing, and wildlife viewing opportunities through varied landscapes across Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Susquehanna River Greenway encompasses a network of protected lands, trails, parks, and waterways that follow the Susquehanna River from its headwaters in Upstate New York, through Pennsylvania, and down to Maryland, where the river empties into the Chesapeake Bay. Spanning nearly 12,500 square miles, it is one of the largest river basins on the East Coast, supporting diverse ecosystems including hardwood forests, riparian wetlands, and rich aquatic habitats. The greenway protects important cultural and historical sites linked to Native American heritage, colonial settlements, and the early industrial history that shaped the region. Visitors experience a wide range of outdoor activities including hiking on river trails, canoeing and kayaking on scenic water sections, fishing for bass and trout, and spotting wildlife such as bald eagles and ospreys. Key landmarks along the greenway include historic towns like Owego and Athens, numerous state parks and preserves, and scenic overlooks offering panoramic river views. The greenway serves as a vital corridor for conservation and outdoor recreation, promoting regional tourism and environmental stewardship. With its accessible trailheads and water access points, it attracts day visitors as well as outdoor enthusiasts seeking multi-day paddling and hiking adventures. Organized greenway efforts foster local partnerships dedicated to natural resource protection, trail development, and educational programs highlighting the river’s ecological and cultural importance.
