About Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area

The Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area is a protected marine region known for its vibrant coral reefs, diverse marine life, and pristine island ecosystems, offering exceptional opportunities for snorkeling, diving, and wildlife observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located off the west coast of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo, the Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area (SIMCA) comprises three main islands: Pulau Kalampunian, Pulau Tiga, and Pulau Timbuluran. Established to safeguard the rich biodiversity of these coral-fringed islands, SIMCA covers extensive shallow waters, mangroves, and coral reef systems. The area is recognized for its exceptionally clear waters and healthy reef ecosystems that support hundreds of species of fish, including rare and colorful reef species, sea turtles, and occasional sightings of reef sharks. The islands are relatively remote, enhancing their natural state with limited human impact. Pulau Tiga is particularly notable for its mud volcanoes, which have moderate geothermal activity attracting scientific interest and eco-tourism. The area is governed with strict conservation measures to prevent overfishing, protect habitats, and regulate tourism. Visitors often engage in snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, and wildlife watching, with the opportunity to observe nesting sea turtles and diverse coral formations up close. The conservation area also serves as a vital nursery ground for fish populations that support surrounding fisheries. While no formal developed trails exist due to its marine focus, immersive marine experiences and small island hikes provide ample outdoor adventure. Access is typically by boat from Kota Kinabalu or nearby coastal towns, requiring coordination with local operators. The Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area is an exceptional destination for those seeking rich marine biodiversity and tranquil island environments largely free from mass tourism.
