Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
The Spanish Moss Trail is a converted rail trail that runs through Beaufort County in South Carolina, connecting the communities of Beaufort, Port Royal, and Burton. Spanning approximately 10.7 miles, the trail follows the route of a former CSX railroad line with gentle grades and a fully paved surface, making it accessible for cyclists, walkers, runners, and other non-motorized users. It crosses several wetlands, salt marshes, and forested areas, providing opportunities to observe local wildlife such as wading birds, deer, and occasional alligators near waterways. Spanish moss hanging from live oak and cypress trees along the trail adds to the scenic charm that reflects the Lowcountry environment. Constructed in multiple phases, the trail was designed to promote outdoor activity, eco-tourism, and alternative transportation options between nearby towns. Key landmarks include scenic bridge crossings over the Chechessee and other tidal creeks, as well as historic points related to the old rail line. The trail is equipped with benches, trailheads with parking, and signage highlighting local natural and cultural history. Visitors appreciate the flat terrain and varied habitat views, making it a popular venue for family outings, casual fitness, birdwatching, and photography. The trail has helped connect communities while preserving a corridor of green space in the rapidly developing coastal region of South Carolina.
