About South Mountain Reservation

South Mountain Reservation is a 2,110-acre urban park in Essex County, New Jersey, offering extensive hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and diverse natural habitats close to New York City’s metropolitan area.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

South Mountain Reservation is a heavily forested public park located primarily in West Orange, New Jersey, spanning approximately 2,110 acres. It is managed by the Essex County Division of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs and is one of the largest public parks in the county. The reservation’s topography is defined by rugged hills and rocky outcrops, part of the Watchung Mountains, with elevations rising to roughly 600 feet. The landscape includes dense deciduous forests dominated by oak, maple, and hickory trees, interspersed with wetlands and brooks that support diverse wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species. History is woven through the area, with remnants of Lenape Native American presence, and notable early 20th century public park development led by the Olmsted Brothers, sons of Frederick Law Olmsted. Popular outdoor recreation opportunities include extensive hiking and mountain biking along its more than 20 miles of maintained trails, picnicking, fishing in the Yellow Brook, and birdwatching. The Hemlock Falls trail leads to a scenic waterfall within the reservation, while the Deserted Village of Feltville, an abandoned 19th-century mill town located within the park, offers a glimpse into regional history. South Mountain Reservation’s proximity to urban centers makes it a well-frequented natural refuge, especially for those seeking moderate to challenging hiking close to an urban environment. Its diverse ecosystems and historic sites appeal to nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Seasonal foliage, spring wildflowers, and winter landscapes provide year-round visual interest for visitors.
