About Song-Kul Lake Protected Area

Song-Kul Lake Protected Area encompasses a stunning high-altitude alpine lake surrounded by expansive summer pastures, rich cultural heritage, and pristine natural beauty, offering visitors a unique experience of Kyrgyz nomadic traditions alongside exceptional outdoor recreation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Song-Kul Lake Protected Area is centered around Song-Kul, an alpine lake situated at approximately 3016 meters (9,895 feet) in the Naryn Province of Kyrgyzstan. The lake itself spans about 2700 hectares and is encircled by rugged mountains and lush meadows known locally as jailoos, which are used by Kyrgyz herders for summer grazing. The terrain is characterized by sprawling alpine pastures, rolling hills, and crystal-clear waters set against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks, making it a stunning destination for nature lovers. Ecologically, the area supports a range of wildlife including marmots, ibex, and numerous bird species such as Himalayan griffon vultures and golden eagles, thriving in this relatively undisturbed ecosystem. Historically, Song-Kul has been central to the nomadic lifestyle of Kyrgyz herders for centuries, who still spend summers in traditional yurts along the lakeshore, preserving cultural customs and pastoralism. Visitors to the Song-Kul Protected Area can engage in hiking, horseback riding, fishing, and cultural tourism. The lake’s remote location and lack of permanent infrastructure afford a truly off-grid experience, ideal for camping under starry night skies and witnessing the rhythms of nomadic life. Notable landmarks include the lake’s turquoise waters, surrounding mountain passes like Kalmak-Kyrchyn, and traditional yurt camps offering authentic local experiences. The site appeals especially to adventurers, photographers, and those interested in experiencing Central Asia’s unique natural and cultural landscapes firsthand.
