About Söderåsen National Park

Söderåsen National Park is a lush forested ridge offering dramatic cliffs, deep ravines, and rich biodiversity in southern Sweden, popular for hiking, birdwatching, and immersive nature experiences.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Söderåsen National Park is located in the province of Skåne in southern Sweden and protects part of the Söderåsen ridge, a prominent escarpment formed during the last Ice Age. The park covers a hilly area characterized by steep slopes, deep beech forests, and striking geological formations including large ravines and valleys carved by glacial runoff. The ecosystem is dominated by old-growth deciduous forests, primarily European beech, fostering a diverse understory and a rich variety of species such as rare lichens, mosses, fungi, and a broad range of birdlife including woodpeckers and owls. Several rare and protected species inhabit the park, including the European green lizard and various bats. Historically, the area was managed as a hunting ground before being designated as a national park in 2001 to preserve its unique natural features and biodiversity. Visitors can enjoy a network of well-maintained hiking trails, panoramic viewpoints overlooking the serene Skåne landscapes, and tranquil lakes along the ridges. Notable landmarks include the distinctive Kopparhatten peak and the impressive Skäralid gorge. The park appeals to outdoor enthusiasts seeking peaceful forest environments, geological wonders, and opportunities for wildlife observation. Educational signs and accessible trails enhance the visitor experience while ensuring conservation. Its proximity to urban centers like Helsingborg makes Söderåsen a convenient natural retreat for locals and travelers interested in scenic walks, photography, and seasonal flora and fauna viewing.
