About Sinking Creek Mountain Wildlife Management Area

Sinking Creek Mountain Wildlife Management Area offers extensive forested landscapes and diverse habitats for exceptional wildlife viewing and outdoor recreation in Southwest Virginia.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Sinking Creek Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA) spans over 13,000 acres in Floyd County, Virginia, characterized by rugged ridges, hardwood forests, and rich ecological diversity. The area comprises a portion of the Appalachian Plateau with steep slopes and a system of creeks, including Sinking Creek, which contribute to excellent aquatic habitats. Its elevation ranges roughly from 2,200 feet to over 3,000 feet, providing a range of microclimates and plant communities. Sinking Creek Mountain WMA is part of Virginia’s system of protected lands managed by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, primarily to conserve native wildlife populations and provide public hunting, fishing, and other outdoor opportunities.

The area is well-known for its large tracts of mixed hardwood forests supporting abundant populations of white-tailed deer, wild turkey, black bear, and various small game species. It is also a hotspot for birdwatchers, with species such as cerulean warblers and other forest-dependent birds found here. Visitors can enjoy hiking on numerous rugged, less-developed trails that snake through steep terrain, offering both challenging routes and quieter experiences away from crowds. Fishing opportunities exist in Sinking Creek and other streams, known for trout and other native fish.

While the area does not offer developed camping, it encourages backcountry camping and day-use activities focused on nature appreciation, hunting, and hiking. The remote and undeveloped character appeals to those seeking solitude and wildlife observation. Access is mainly via forest service roads and small parking areas, with some areas requiring moderate hiking to reach. Overall, Sinking Creek Mountain WMA is an important natural refuge with quality outdoor recreation for those interested in Virginia’s Appalachian mountain environment.
