Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Simnas Regional Park, established in 1997, is located in Alytus County, southern Lithuania. Covering a mix of forests, wetlands, and lakes, including the notable Simnas Lake, the park presents a unique mosaic of habitats supporting diverse flora and fauna. The terrain features gentle hills and expansive wetlands that provide important breeding grounds for many bird species, making the park a key site for ornithologists and nature enthusiasts. The park preserves cultural sites including ancient burial mounds and traditional Lithuanian rural architecture, reflecting the region's historical human impact. Recreational visitors can enjoy well-marked hiking and biking trails through mixed pine and deciduous forests, offering scenic views of the park’s lakes and wetlands. Simnas Regional Park is notable for its peaceful environment and is a popular destination for quiet nature observation, fishing, and seasonal wildlife viewing, particularly during migrating bird seasons. It also serves as an outdoor classroom for environmental education programs. While it is less known internationally compared to larger national parks, its tranquil setting and biological richness make it a valuable protected area and a rewarding destination for regional visitors and eco-tourists.
