About Sihwa Tidal Flats

Sihwa Tidal Flats is a vast coastal wetland ecosystem located in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, known for its rich biodiversity, especially migratory birds, and its role as a vital ecological buffer between land and sea.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Sihwa Tidal Flats stretch along the western coast of the Korean Peninsula, bordering the Yellow Sea in Gyeonggi Province. This expansive tidal flat area was historically a natural estuarine environment known for its nutrient-rich mudflats supporting diverse marine life and migratory waterfowl. Following large-scale development projects in the 1990s, including construction of the Sihwa Lake Tidal Power Station—the world's largest tidal power facility—the traditional tidal flow was altered, but extensive conservation efforts have helped preserve this critical habitat. The flats serve as an essential stopover for migratory birds along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, hosting species such as the endangered Black-faced Spoonbill, Far Eastern Curlew, and several species of shorebirds and waterfowl. The unique intertidal environment supports rich invertebrate communities vital for the coastal food web. Visitors to the area can enjoy birdwatching, nature photography, and educational tours focused on wetland ecology and sustainable coastal management. Nearby viewing platforms and walking paths provide access without disturbing sensitive habitats. The Sihwa Tidal Flats also highlight the dynamic balance between human infrastructure development and ecological preservation, making it a key example of integrated coastal zone management. Despite being less known internationally than some other Korean natural sites, it holds significant cultural and environmental importance locally, attracting naturalists and researchers alike.
