Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
The Sierra del Segura Protected Area stretches across the provinces of Jaén in Andalucía and parts of Albacete in Castilla-La Mancha. This protected region forms part of the eastern end of the Baetic System and is characterized by its steep limestone mountain ranges, deep river canyons, and dense Mediterranean forests. Its diverse ecology includes holm oak, pine forests, and riparian vegetation, supporting a variety of wildlife such as griffon vultures, wild boar, and the endangered Iberian lynx in nearby habitats. Historically, the Sierra del Segura area is rich in traditional rural villages with cultural landmarks including ancient water mills and archaeological remains. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the region’s extensive network of hiking and mountain biking trails that offer spectacular views of the Guadalimar and Segura river valleys. Notable landmarks include the dramatic Covatillas Gully and the panoramic viewpoint known as Mirador de los Buitres, where one can observe soaring birds of prey. The region’s diverse landscape and well-preserved environment make it a prime destination for eco-tourism, bird watching, and outdoor sports. Visitors appreciate its peaceful, relatively undiscovered nature combined with authentic Spanish mountain culture.
