About Sierra de los Cuchumatanes Protected Area

The Sierra de los Cuchumatanes Protected Area in Guatemala is a unique highland ecosystem offering striking mountain landscapes, traditional indigenous villages, and rich biodiversity, ideal for outdoor enthusiasts interested in hiking, cultural immersion, and wildlife observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Sierra de los Cuchumatanes Protected Area covers the highest non-volcanic mountain range in Central America, located in the western department of Huehuetenango, Guatemala. This rugged high-altitude region rises up to 3,837 meters (12,589 feet) at its peak, Cerro Las Minas, and represents a rare ecosystem of pine and fir forests, páramo grasslands, and cloud forests interspersed with unique karstic landscapes and alpine meadows. Rich in biodiversity, the area serves as an important habitat for endemic and endangered species such as the Guatemalan black howler monkey, the horned guan bird, and several species of orchids and bromeliads. The Sierra is culturally significant as home to the indigenous Maya Mam communities, whose traditional farming techniques and woven textiles provide a fascinating complement to the natural experience. Visitors can explore remote villages, ancient archaeological sites, and a network of trails that wind through diverse terrain, ranging from grassy high plateaus to steep ravines and forested slopes. Outdoor activities include hiking, birdwatching, horseback riding, and mountain biking, with opportunities to experience traditional markets and local crafts. The protected area is part of a biosphere reserve, emphasizing conservation alongside traditional land use. Though infrastructure is limited, adventurous travelers find great rewards in the spectacular vistas of jagged peaks, deep valleys, and cultural encounters that define the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes landscape.
