Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Shenango River Lake is a reservoir created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers along the Shenango River, spanning Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and parts of Trumbull and Mahoning Counties in Ohio. Constructed primarily for flood control, water quality, and recreation, the lake covers approximately 3,072 acres of surface water surrounded by protected woodlands and natural areas. Nestled within a gently rolling landscape typical of western Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio, the lake provides vital habitat for a variety of fish species such as largemouth bass, walleye, and catfish, making it popular with anglers. The surrounding land features mixed deciduous forests, wetlands, and riparian zones supporting diverse wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, various waterfowl, and numerous migratory birds. Visitors enjoy a range of outdoor activities throughout the year, including boating on the expansive lake, fishing from shore or boat, camping at multiple developed campgrounds, hiking on several maintained trails, and wildlife viewing during spring and fall migrations. The lake supports several boat launch areas, picnic spots, and scenic overlooks. Nearby recreational facilities, such as swimming beaches and playgrounds, particularly appeal to families. The levee and dam, completed in 1965, serve important flood control and safety roles for downstream communities in the Shenango River watershed. Shenango River Lake maintains a balance of conservation and recreation, providing a peaceful natural retreat while accommodating active outdoor lifestyles. Its accessible location within a few hours of Pittsburgh and Cleveland makes it a favored weekend getaway for urban residents and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
