Sharavathi Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the central Western Ghats in the Indian state of Karnataka. Covering an area of approximately 431 square kilometers, the sanctuary is primarily composed of moist deciduous forest intermixed with semi-evergreen and evergreen locales. It is part of the Sharavathi River Valley, which hosts a varied ecosystem, significant for its role in sustaining a wide array of plant and animal life. Established in 1972, the sanctuary boasts rich biodiversity, including species like tigers, leopards, wild boars, and elephants. It is also a haven for bird watchers, with numerous endemic and migratory species present. The geography of the sanctuary is characterized by undulating terrain, valleys, and water bodies that add to its scenic beauty. Key landmarks within the sanctuary include the Linganamakki Reservoir and several mesmerising waterfalls such as the Jog Falls, one of the highest plunge waterfalls in India. Visitors can engage in various recreational activities like hiking, bird watching, and photography. The area's appeal lies in its tranquil environment, lush greenery, and the opportunity to observe wildlife in a relatively undisturbed habitat.
