Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
The Serra dos Parecis Environmental Protection Area (APA) is located in the western Brazilian state of Rondônia. Established to safeguard the natural landscapes and biodiversity of the Serra dos Parecis plateau, this protected area covers an extensive region characterized by a transition zone between the Amazon rainforest and the cerrado biome. This unique ecological interface supports a wide variety of flora and fauna, including endemic plant species and several threatened animals such as jaguars, giant anteaters, and numerous bird species. The topography consists of rolling hills, plateaus, and forested valleys allowing for impressive vistas. Historically, the area has been inhabited by indigenous communities and traditional peoples whose cultures are intertwined with the land. Recreationally, the Serra dos Parecis APA caters primarily to ecotourism, environmental education, birdwatching, and scientific research. Visitors can enjoy hiking on informal nature trails, wildlife observation, and photographic excursions. Given its ecological sensitivity and limited infrastructure, tourism is maintained at a low-impact level, emphasizing preservation and sustainability. The APA plays a critical role in protecting watersheds that feed into larger river systems, making it vital for regional environmental health. The region's remoteness and limited access enhance its appeal for adventurers seeking off-the-beaten-path natural experiences amidst pristine South American ecosystems.
