The park stretches across 398.22 square kilometers but the southern edge presents a distinct blend of steep granite peaks, dense forests, and crystal-clear rivers. This part of the park provides access to less crowded trails and serves as a gateway to explore the park’s iconic rock formations such as Ulsanbawi and the towering Daecheongbong Peak, Korea’s third highest peak at 1,708 meters. The park’s diverse ecosystems range from temperate deciduous forests at lower elevations to alpine plants near the summits, supporting over 1,400 species of animals and plants including endangered species like the Korean goral and Siberian musk deer. Historically, the area has cultural significance with Buddhist temples such as Sinheungsa located nearby, which offers visitors a mix of spiritual heritage and natural splendor. Popular activities on the southern edge include hiking, wildlife viewing, photography, and seasonal foliage tours in autumn. Winter also brings opportunities for snowshoeing and experiencing frost-hued landscapes.
