Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Sea Ranch Coastal Bluff Open Space is located along the Sonoma County coast in Northern California, extending over several miles of dramatic cliffs and rocky shoreline overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This protected open space preserves the scenic coastal bluffs, grasslands, and coastal sage scrub habitats that support a variety of wildlife including shorebirds, marine mammals, and native plant species. Originally developed as part of the Sea Ranch community in the 1960s, the open space was intentionally preserved to maintain the area's natural character and ecological integrity. Visitors can explore well-maintained trails that wind along the bluff tops, offering striking views of offshore rocks, crashing waves, and expansive vistas reaching north toward Point Arena and south to Bodega Head. The ecological diversity includes coastal prairie, wildflower meadows, and maritime chaparral, providing habitat for species such as peregrine falcon, harbor seals, and migrating whales visible offshore during seasonal migrations. The open space’s dramatic geology and peaceful atmosphere make it a favored destination for hiking, birdwatching, photography, and picnicking. There are no formal campgrounds or developed facilities within the open space itself, but nearby communities of Sea Ranch and Gualala provide lodging and amenities.
