About Scanlon Creek Conservation Area

Scanlon Creek Conservation Area offers over 2,500 acres of woodlands, prairies, and wetlands for hiking, hunting, and wildlife observation just south of St. Louis, Missouri.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Scanlon Creek Conservation Area is a diverse natural preserve spanning approximately 2,544 acres in northern Jefferson County, Missouri. Managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation, it features a combination of upland oak-hickory forests, native prairies, wetlands, and creek corridors offering habitat for a variety of native wildlife. Historically, the area was farmland before being restored as a public natural area, allowing visitors to experience both natural and cultural landscapes. The conservation area is particularly well-known for its outdoor recreational opportunities, including more than 15 miles of multi-use trails that accommodate hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Scanlon Creek itself runs through the area, providing wetland ecosystems that support amphibians, migratory birds, and other species. Hunting is permitted in designated seasons, particularly for deer and turkey, making it a popular destination for local sportsmen. The nearby bluff overlooks offer scenic views along the East Fork of the Little River, and the rich biodiversity makes it an attractive spot for birdwatchers and photographers. Visitors appreciate the balance of quiet solitude and active recreation, with several day-use areas and accessible parking. Educational programs occasionally take place here to increase awareness of native ecosystems and conservation efforts. With its proximity to suburban areas outside St. Louis, Scanlon Creek Conservation Area serves as an important green space for outdoor enthusiasts seeking nature experiences within easy reach of the city.
