Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Santuário de Lagoa do Fogo, meaning "Sanctuary of the Lake of Fire," is a protected natural reserve centered around one of the Azores' most breathtaking volcanic calderas, located on São Miguel Island. The centerpiece is the Lagoa do Fogo, a crystal-clear crater lake formed by a volcanic eruption approximately 15,000 years ago. The reserve encompasses steep volcanic slopes, laurel forests, hydrangea-lined roads, and endemic plant species that thrive in this humid, temperate climate. The area is a designated Natura 2000 habitat due to its unique ecosystems and native wildlife, including a variety of bird species and rare plants. Visitors are drawn to the sanctuary for its peaceful, unspoiled landscapes and numerous hiking trails providing panoramic views over the lake and surrounding valleys. Popular trails range from moderate hikes leading down to the lake shore to more challenging routes crossing volcanic ridges and forested slopes. The reserve is also valued for its geological significance, showcasing volcanic formations and fumarolic activity. While the area remains largely wild, a modest infrastructure of viewpoints and interpretative signage invites nature lovers and adventurers alike. The Santuário de Lagoa do Fogo offers a tranquil escape into pristine volcanic wilderness with opportunities for photography, bird watching, and immersive nature walks. Its relative remoteness and protected status help preserve its tranquility, making it a must-visit destination on São Miguel Island for outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking connection with volcanic landscapes.
