Santa Elena Biological Reserve is located in the Cordillera de Tilarán mountain range in Costa Rica, close to the famous Monteverde area. The reserve covers approximately 765 acres (310 hectares) of pristine cloud forest, characterized by moist, dense vegetation and a rich array of flora and fauna. Its high altitude results in frequent cloud cover that supports a unique ecosystem. The reserve was established in 1989 with a strong community involvement that continues to emphasize conservation and sustainable tourism.
