About San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust

The San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust is a scenic corridor along the San Joaquin River in California dedicated to preserving natural habitats and providing recreational opportunities such as hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust encompasses approximately 22 miles of protected land along both banks of the San Joaquin River in the Central Valley of California. Founded in 1998, the Parkway serves as a greenbelt corridor through the cities of Fresno, Clovis, and Madera, offering urban access to natural and recreational environments. The area protects riparian woodlands, wetlands, grasslands, and floodplains critical to the health of the San Joaquin River ecosystem and several threatened and endangered wildlife species, including migratory birds and native fish.

The Parkway features multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and equestrian activities, along with river access points for kayaking and fishing. Several parks and preserved natural areas such as Woodward Park and the Jensen River Ranch add significant cultural and historical value, highlighting the agricultural and indigenous heritage of the region. The San Joaquin River itself plays a vital role in water management and ecological restoration efforts throughout the Central Valley.

Visitors enjoy opportunities to spot diverse wildlife, explore educational venues that emphasize riverine ecology, and experience scenic urban green space just outside the city centers. The Parkway and Conservation Trust collaborates with community partners to enhance local recreation, environmental education, and habitat restoration projects. The area is well-loved for easy access, family-friendly trails, and a blend of outdoor activities along California’s one of its most vital river systems.
