About Salawin National Park

Salawin National Park protects the dramatic landscapes surrounding the Salawin (Salween) River, offering rugged river canyons, tropical forests, and diverse wildlife within a remote and largely undeveloped setting.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Salawin National Park is located in northwestern Thailand along the Salawin (Salween) River, which forms part of the border with Myanmar. The park covers mountainous terrain, steep river gorges, and lush evergreen forests. The Salween River carves deep canyons and supports a complex ecosystem where tropical and subtropical flora and fauna thrive. The park is home to several rare and endangered species, including Asian elephants, clouded leopards, and hornbills. Vegetation varies with elevation, featuring dense dipterocarp forests, mixed deciduous forests, and riverine habitats.

Historically, the Salween River region has served as an important natural boundary and a corridor for indigenous hill tribes, whose traditional lifestyles are intertwined with the landscape. The park offers opportunities for trekking through remote mountainous terrain, birdwatching, and river-based activities such as kayaking and fishing. Notable landmarks include dramatic river gorges, limestone cliffs, and several waterfalls scattered throughout the forest. Visitor infrastructure is minimal, preserving the park’s wild character and requiring that visitors be self-sufficient and prepared for rugged conditions.

Salawin National Park appeals to travelers seeking a less-visited, pristine natural area with a strong focus on wilderness exploration and cultural heritage. Its combination of river scenery, rich biodiversity, and remote wilderness makes it a unique destination in Thailand’s protected areas network.
