About Rupite Nature Reserve

Rupite Nature Reserve is a unique protected area in Bulgaria renowned for its volcanic landscape, rich biodiversity, and cultural heritage, offering visitors natural hot springs, rare flora, and engaging hiking opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Rupite Nature Reserve, located in the southeastern part of Bulgaria near the village of Rupite in the Petrich municipality, encompasses an area characterized by volcanic landforms and geothermal phenomena. The reserve is situated on the southwestern slopes of the Kozhuh volcanic mountain, which last erupted around 1.5 million years ago. This geological history has created an extraordinary environment featuring mineral hot springs, fumarolic activity, and a terrain covered in igneous rock formations.

Ecologically, Rupite supports diverse Mediterranean and steppe plant communities including species such as the Balkan endemic Bulgarian rose and sacred herbs traditionally used in local folk medicine. Fauna within the reserve includes various bird species common to the region, reptiles, and small mammals that thrive in the semi-arid climate.

Historically, Rupite is well-known for its cultural significance tied to Baba Vanga, the famous Bulgarian mystic who lived nearby. The area attracts visitors not only for its natural beauty but also for its spiritual and cultural importance. Hiking trails provide scenic routes around the volcanic terrain and lead to unique viewpoints overlooking the Struma River valley and the surrounding landscape.

Visitors are drawn to the therapeutic hot mineral springs located within the reserve, which have been used for their healing properties for centuries. The nature reserve is an appealing destination for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and those interested in geology and local history. The combination of volcanic features, rich flora, and cultural landmarks makes Rupite Nature Reserve a distinct outdoor experience in Bulgaria.
