About Rotes Moor Nature Reserve

Rotes Moor Nature Reserve is one of the largest raised bogs in Hesse, Germany, offering visitors unique peatland landscapes, diverse flora and fauna, and peaceful hiking opportunities in a rare protected wetland environment.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Rotes Moor Nature Reserve encompasses a significant raised bog ecosystem located near the town of Willingen in the federal state of Hesse, Germany. This protected area spreads over approximately 120 hectares and is recognized for its distinctive red-colored peat deposits and diverse wetland habitats. The bog formed centuries ago through the gradual accumulation of sphagnum moss and sedges, creating a waterlogged, acidic environment that supports specialized plant species such as carnivorous sundews, cotton grass, and various orchids. Wildlife thrives here as well, notably a variety of dragonflies, birds like the European golden plover, and small mammals adapted to bog conditions. Historically, the bog was used for peat extraction and turf cutting, but today conservation efforts have restored its natural state. Visitors are drawn to the reserve’s extensive boardwalk system, which enables dry and safe exploration through the fragile peatlands while minimizing human impact. In addition to nature observation, Rotes Moor offers tranquil hiking trails and interpretive signage describing bog ecology. The reserve’s proximity to the Sauerland mountain range provides scenic vistas, especially notable from the nearby Ettelsberg mountain. Overall, the Rotes Moor offers a distinct combination of natural beauty, ecological importance, and quiet recreation, making it a valuable destination for nature lovers and ecological researchers alike.
